'Gyroscope's Tom Wells led a workshop at the Institute of Public Relations' national conference on 9 November 2004 .
The workshop examined how clients can ensure swift and efficient access to the agency skills and services they need, when they need them, without spending time and money on developing and maintaining resources they don't use; and how agencies can stay in touch with occasional clients‚ and potential clients, without tying up people and money in unproductive research and relationships.
Above all, it considered how PR resources can be obtained and managed to deliver maximum value at the best possible cost, without the imposition of procurement disciplines which may be entirely inappropriate to buying and managing creative services.
This workshop examined some of the strategies that enable clients and agencies to build flexible, efficient and mutual contacts and contracts, such as rosters; supplier forums; client/agency conferences; and short-term job swaps. It also looked at some of the procurement pitfalls that can strangle effective communications activities before they start.
Participants were canvassed for the techniques they use themselves, and the workshop generated an overview of current practice and the pros and cons of the various approaches.
The IPR conference took place at Claridges Hotel in central London on 9th November. Download the summary of the workshops here.
