Comms MAP

Introduction

The focus on measuring and maximising the return on the communications has never been greater than it is today. However, despite the huge pressure to cut costs, it is essential to remember that 'the best value' is always preferable to 'the lowest cost'.

A key problem for communications professionals in consultancies and in-house alike, as they seek to win the investment they need from their clients or their senior management, is the lack of consistent, accurate and detailed information on the communications budgets and structures of a broad spread of organisations.

This lack of benchmarks and parameters can make it difficult to plan budgets and staffing, and to argue credibly for the investment and resources needed. Even when a well-informed manager can clearly identify the need for a given level of investment, they may have difficulty justifying it to senior colleagues and budget holders.

The Comms MAP service

Now, Gyroscope can offer a solution - Comms MAP, the Communications Money & People service.

Over the years, we have built up a detailed database of the communications spending and structures of UK and multinational organisations. The database currently covers 103 organisations, and is continually updated and extended. All data is completely anonymous, and cannot be associated in any way with any contributing organisation. The data available is detailed below.

This data is now available for purchase by client organisations and agencies alike.

How it works

The process and cost is simple and transparent:

  1. The buyer specifies the type of organisation they are interested in – for example, ‘B2B-focused companies with more than 2,000 employees’. Categories include:
    • Sector - ie: Public sector, Private sector, Third sector
    • Industry - eg: telecoms, automotive, FMCG
    • Focus - eg: B2B, B2C, mixed
    • Geography - eg: UK only, European regions, US, global
    • Turnover/Throughput (public sector)
    • Employee numbers
  2. Gyroscope confirms how many ‘qualifying’ organisations it has data sets for. Each data set includes:
    • Total communications budget
    • Total internal/employee communications budget
    • Total external PR/corporate communications budget
    • Communications budget as % turnover (private sector)/throughput (public sector)
    • PR/corporate communications budget as % total communications budget
    • PR/corporate communications budget as % of turnover/throughput
    • Internal communications spend per employee
    • Number of employees with PR/corporate communications as sole function, significant part of function or minor part of function, in corporate centre and in sub-units
  3. The buyer confirms how many qualifying data sets they wish to purchase – a larger sample of data sets gives a more detailed insight and better comparisons
  4. The data is supplied by email within 48 hours of purchase.

Choosing and using the data

The data can be selected and manipulated in many ways. For example, with advice from Gyroscope on the categories of organizations that should be selected, the data can be used to answer questions such as:

Of course, the more specific the type of organisation selected, the smaller will be the number of qualifying organisations in the database.

What you get

View an example of a typical report. In this example, data sets are provided for three private sector businesses, operating in the UK and Europe, focused solely on business-to-business communications.

Please note, the data in this example is fictitious, and most reports would include more than three data sets.

What it costs

Each data set costs £100. Hence, full data on a sample of 6 organisations of a specified type would cost £600; data on a sample of 11 organisations would cost £1,100.

However, 'client' organisations that are willing to add their own data to the database receive a 50% discount on any data they purchase in the subsequent 12 months.

Data is contributed with complete anonymity: no data can be associated with any organisation.

To contribute their data, 'client' organisations are directed to a secure, external website. When they have entered their data, they are sent an automated email, which they forward to Gyroscope when placing their order for data. This email qualifies them for the 50% discount.
